Inside each FDgard capsule are many tiny coated spheres containing caraway oil and l-Menthol. These spheres form part of the Site-Specific Targeting system, also known as SST®. The two ingredients have their own amounts in the formula: 50 mg of caraway oil and 41.5 mg of l-Menthol per two capsules.

The outer shell and the coated contents serve different purposes. The shell keeps the serving together in a capsule format. The coatings around the spheres form part of the system designed to carry the ingredients through the stomach and release them in the small intestine.

Keep the tiny spheres intact when taking FDgard. Swallow the capsule whole with water, or open it and mix the contents with a non-dairy food such as applesauce. Do not crush or chew the capsule or its contents; their coatings are part of the delivery design.

SST® stands for Site-Specific Targeting, the delivery technology used in FDgard. The outer capsule holds the coated spheres together, while the sphere coatings are designed to control where the ingredients are released. This layered format is a defining feature of the product.

The outer capsule can open in the stomach while the coatings around the tiny spheres resist early release there. As those layers dissolve further along the digestive tract, the system is intended to release caraway oil and l-Menthol in the small intestine. Keep the spheres intact when taking them.

Choosing a capsule involves more than comparing milligram amounts. FDgard combines two ingredients with their own botanical sources, a gelatin-containing capsule and the SST® coating system. Caraway oil and l-Menthol are listed individually, with their own botanical sources. Caraway oil is identified as Carum carvi from the seed. The l-Menthol is identified as Mentha arvensis from the aerial parts. They are not two names for the same ingredient, and their amounts should not be confused with the weight of the complete capsule.
